Remove Sagging and Excess Skin Above the Eyes in Richmond

As we age, our skin can lose its elasticity around the eyes, resulting in a droopy or tired appearance when the upper lid begins to sag.

Happily, this problem is simple to correct with blepharoplasty at our Richmond-based practice. Known medically as an upper eyelid lift, this procedure can make a significant difference for patients who want to look fresh, alert, and attentive.

What Can a Blepharoplasty Address?

When it comes to blepharoplasty surgery, Dr. Robyn Watts focuses strictly on the upper lid to correct sagging, hooding, and other problems associated with laxity. Drooping skin is typically a result of aging, which causes collagen, elastin, and other supportive elements to break down. Other factors—such as exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and environmental pollution—can also damage the skin. Excessive rubbing, weakening muscles, and genetics can further contribute to the problem.

Although many patients choose blepharoplasty surgery to address these concerns and achieve a younger look, the procedure can also be used to correct defects of the upper lid region or simply to change the aesthetic of the upper eye for patients who want a change.

Laxity may impact both eyes, or it could happen to a single upper eyelid. In cases where sagging is limited only to the right or left side, blepharoplasty surgery can restore facial symmetry. In addition to the cosmetic improvements, some patients benefit from correcting tissue that has begun to intrude into their field of vision. The more dramatic an upper lid’s sagging, the more it obscures the eye itself. Tightening the lax skin can improve functionality by removing the tissue blocking the uppermost portion of the eye.

A consultation with Dr. Watts will allow her to determine the extent to which a blepharoplasty can meet your needs.

Dr. Robyn Watts

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon

Dr. Robyn Watts is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction, cosmetic breast surgery, and body contouring. Trained in Canada and the U.S., she leads plastic surgery at Richmond Hospital, practices at Cambie Surgical Centre, teaches at UBC, and is known for meticulous technique, compassion, and natural results.

What Does an Upper Eyelid Lift Involve?

The procedure for a blepharoplasty is a simple and relatively quick one. At the time of a patient’s scheduled surgery, they’ll arrive at our office in Richmond. After local anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Watts will first make an incision at the top of the upper eyelids, taking great care to position it in the natural lines and creases of the area. This is to camouflage the resulting scar, which should be practically imperceptible above the eye.

Through this incision, Dr. Watts will remove excess fat and skin, as well as position and tighten tissues as necessary. Lastly, the blepharoplasty incision is closed using stitches so that the skin stays in its lifted position and the patient can begin their gentle recovery.

The entire blepharoplasty procedure typically takes about an hour and a half, although every surgery is unique.

Results and Recovery After Eyelid Surgery

Our team will advise you before and after your blepharoplasty surgery on how best to avoid discomfort and maximize results.

Following an upper blepharoplasty, expect bruising and swelling around the area of the surgery. During the first week of recovery, patients will experience impaired vision, so be sure to have someone available who can assist with any important tasks. Dryness in the eyes is also a common side effect.

All of these post-surgery effects will fade naturally in the coming days and weeks as the eyelid heals. During this time, patients may want to limit their use of screens or up-close reading to avoid strain on the eyes.

After about two weeks of downtime, blepharoplasty patients should be able to return to typical daily activities with minimal to no disruption. The incision scar will remain hidden in the crease between the upper eyelid and the brow, so once your healing process is complete, you will be left with only your newly refreshed look.

What Complements a Blepharoplasty?

A little eye lift can go a long way toward creating the look you want, but if there are more steps to your cosmetic journey, we’d like to help with those, too! Dr. Robyn Watts offers a wide range of cosmetic surgeries performed with the same care and skill, whether you’re interested in changing your body contours or the proportions of your breasts. We also provide a number of non-surgical treatments that are a great way to complement your refreshed appearance.

Patients not ready for blepharoplasty or other surgical procedures may choose to address signs of aging in the area with an injectable, such as BOTOX®. By relaxing key muscles, injections can smooth crow’s feet, frown lines, and other wrinkles that develop near the eyes and on the forehead.
